Leesburg Fire Pipes and Drums
My Pages
The history of the bagpipes and drums in the fire service goes back to over a century and a half ago.   In 1845, the Great Potato Famine in Ireland sparked perhaps the greatest immigration to the United States from Ireland . The Irish came into the US in great numbers, and they were looked upon as second-class citizens, not having the opportunity to work in factories and shops that had jobs available.   Many of these employers had signs in their buildings reading “NINA”, or No Irish Need Apply.   The only jobs that these new Americans could get were the ones that nobody wanted, the dangerous and dirty jobs of Firemen and Cops. Line of Duty deaths were more common back then, and the Irish funerals had the bagpipes played at them.   It was this tradition that became adopted at any firefighter or police funeral.

Like many other bands in the fire service, we enjoy members from any local fire department in the Lake County area.   Also, like many other bands, we wear our departments shoulder patch on one side and the band patch on the other side.   We embrace our diversity in departments represented yet we also show our solidaridity.

We are currently interested in finding firefighters and firefighter's family members that would like to become bagpipe or drumming students to help make this band truly representative of the Lake County area fire service and its departments.

At the Leesburg Parade 2007, two band members promised to each other that the first official gig for the band would be the 2008 Leesburg Christmas Parade.   At that time there was no one who played any instrument, all we did have was the ambition to make it happen.
